The Window (Picture Story)

"Okay this is my final offer. You get an office with a window but you're not allowed to look outside," he said.

I looked at him with a blank expression trying to believe my ears. This was the man who had graduated from Harvard, scored As all through his life and there he was putting all his achievements to shame and talking nonsense. Here was the boss of a billion dollar company being so petty towards his brother. Ok I admit we had not gotten along as kids but this is not how you act when youre fifty years old and this successful.

"How would you know if I looked out?" I asked with gritted teeth.

"There'll be cameras installed on all angles inside your office and the minute you look outside an alarm will blow off warning me at which you will be fired immediately."

"What if I use my smart phone and take photographs of the view from the window and see it later?"

"Oh then youre not allowed a smart phone."

"What if I ask a customer to look behind and tell me what he can see?"

*silence*

"Ill have audio enabled video cameras so I know what you all talk about in there."

"You know what? Big brother youre a waste of space. This is my Fathers company and no matter how ridiculous you act I will work here and rise to power here and own half this company just like it was my right and nothing you do can stop me. And just so you know, I will look out the window the whole day, In fact I'll make sure I do nothing without looking out the window and if you try to stop me Im calling Mom!

*silence*

"That was mean, John."

"I dont care Bob. Now if you ll excuse me, I have a window to look out from."

Their Dad looked down from heaven at his two old, over qualified but mostly imbecile sons and felt glad he was a safe distance from them.

The Fools Den

Where does the wise man turn to
When sense and sagacity fail him
When his wit and acumen run askew

He turns to the inn at the centre of the woods
Where losers of the land meet and greet

Theres beer and meat
And poker and chess
Theres everything much
And everything less

Nothing like some song and dance
Nothing like a drink served by grubby fingers
On a dirty wooden table
To rekindle the spirit

Life being lived ceaselessly,
carelessly,
thoroughly

Or quite so?

Life being lived breathlessly,
excitably,
feverishly

Or quite so?

Is it enough to see a life lived
To make one want to live

Is it enough to see life loved
To make one want to love

Is it enough to see content faces
To be content

The wise man's piercing eyes
are observing the merriment

Looking at weak men rejoice
at something and anything,
at nothing and everything

Wisdom is the harbinger of suffering
All joy lies with the fools
